Response to ProveIt!
To everyone else "Implement a student-run television station
on campus" was the proposal I submitted. That by itself I agree sounds kind of,
uh, "BLEH" for lack of a better word. So here are the key Ideas that make it
good before you scroll down to the next post because you forgot to take your
Ritalin:
1) PAID, not boring sit at a desk stab a pencil in your eye for 5hrs jobs for
students on campus.
2) Experience to put on your resume while getting paid. (I'm looking at your
writers and theater and new MCS majors...and everyone else)
3) One of many show ideas includes a weekly game show that will have a cash
prize. (how much is undetermined but I'd like to see it at about $50)
4) Entertainment to watch when its 3am and the only thing on is Girls Gone Wild
commercials (not that they aren't amusing until the 3rd time it loops)
5) See yourself and friends on TV / Internet which makes it even more
entertaining and will build a sense of community at the school.
6) Outlet for creativity, you want to make a show? We will help you make it and
air it even if its only cameras and time. (We can only fund so many shows)
7) Its sustainable through local advertising
8) Shows would be shown online for commuters to see also, and in the future on
your dorm TV's
9) Did I mention you get paid?
Now to everyone else that is still reading:
After looking at some of the other ideas above, I realize that, while not
perfectly, the station will encompass many of the other proveit ideas. (Some
were thought of before the above list was released, some after to accommodate
interests of the school)
"Add a ropes and challenge course on campus to encourage team-building and
leadership training." - One of our show ideas was something quite similar to
Ninja Warrior, obviously on a smaller scale though. While this would be rather
expensive to start out with, our advertising revenue would make this possible in
the future.
"Install flat-screen video monitors in various locations across campus to
advertise upcoming events."
A student in a class we were visiting said she would like to see a "what's
happening this week at UMBC" show that would include everything from SEB/Campus
sponsored events to "Hey I want to have a BBQ on Fri, Can you tell the rest of
the campus to come?"
"Establish a Student Creative Center where students could have 24/7 access to
art supplies and tools"
This one is a bit of a stretch but the majority of the people involved with the
project thus far, including myself, are up at all hours of the night and, while
we don't have paints and pastels and such we are pretty much willing to film
something or do things more on the digital side.
"Create a First Year Seminar to teach students about the school’s programs,
events, and departments"
...Lets just say something is in the works.
"Hold an annual goofy “Universal Genius” competition with students from other
Baltimore-area schools" & "Host a “Retriever Bowl” football tournament to
increase school spirit and raise money for charity." Both of these, and others,
including concerts from some local bands, are examples of one time events we
would love to help with, film and show on the station.
One of our biggest goals is to raise enough money through advertising to help
provide fun events to the campus even if they have nothing to do with the
station. (Personally, I would love to see a rave or similar event held on
campus. Nothing against the SEB, but they pretty much have to try and appeal to
all students and the music/events, while fun, reflect that)
Some other show ideas we had:
-A cooking show geared for students, taking into account both the lack of money
and lack of cooking tools offered in dorms. (The gentleman interested in doing
this show jumped at the chance stating that he always wanted to be a chef and
have his own cooking show)
-A Dailyshow style campus/local/national news show.
-Not quite ready to announce this idea but I'll say it involves a tournament and
all the martial arts clubs on campus.
-...and what good is a list without an "...AND MORE"
